About Nora
Nora Crown has loved books and movies ever since she can remember. Following this passion she decided to write stories encompassing the high speed dialogues of plays and the scene directives of screenplays combined within the easy to follow format of a novel! The readers have the chance to imagine every setting as a scene in a movie . They get to choose their preferred actors and surroundings. The imaginative powers make the readers become part of the story rather than remain on the side lines as mere spectators. Nora lives with her artist husband and their son in California. When not writing she is busy homeschooling their son, doing yoga, watching movies, reading, visiting museums and art galleries and going for long walks.
Meet Nora
What's the story behind your book 'The Visit'?
As I started writing The Visit it wasn’t meant as a sequel to Nelly. But the longer I worked at it the stronger I felt the ties to the first book pulling me back. So I gave in to the pull and became a spectator who recorded the story.
What's the story behind your book 'Nelly'?
Many years ago I came across the name Nelly. This name inspired me to write a romantic suspense story. And since I enjoy movies as much as I enjoy reading I decided to write the story as a crossing between novel and screenplay where the reader has the chance to imagine every setting as a scene in a movie. Later I was reassured in my choice of style by the introduction to "The Misfits" written by the greatest Playwright, Arthur Miller.
Who are your favorite authors? There are many authors whose works I enjoy. But few have left a lasting impression. I like Jane Austen for her true romance, that combines life and dream seamlessly. I like Agatha Christie for her true wit. I like Victor Hugo for believing in human change. I like Albert Camus for accepting human nature. I like George Orwell for his precise depiction of human nature. I like Willa Cather for her heartfelt story telling. And I like Truman Capote for being the true artist of the written word.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I was 12 and we moved to a house close to a library. Obviously I was reading before that time. In three languages in fact. But the one story that left a lifelong impression was the historical adult fiction novel William, the Conqueror. It inspired my love for history which in later years became one of my majors.
What do you read for pleasure?
National Geographic, for as long as I can remember. Plays and screenplays which can be hidden gems are a real pleasure to read.
How do you discover the books you read?
I look at many books and read the first paragraph. If it grabs me, I read the first page and if that grabs me even more, then I continue.
When did you first start writing?
As far as I can remember I have been writing. My thoughts, my prayers, my diaries and my stories. Writing is a form of meditation for me.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was still very young and liked to scare my little sister.
What is your writing process?
I am more of a process writer and do not plan before I start writing. I sit at my computer and start with an idea for a name. That name is my inspiration for the whole story. It is as if that person is telling me her story and wants me to type it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The escape to my very own dream world.
How do you approach cover design?
My love for reading was always paired with my love for movies. I imagine any book that I read or write as a movie. Then I describe that vision to the designer. And I was always drawn to books that have graphic designs.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to make my own decisions. And frankly speaking the higher royalties are quite attractive.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
On three continents and four countries. But it was always London that I would consider my special place...
Describe your desk.
Very orderly. I do not function with mess around me.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My son and my husband, the most important people in my life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am usually very busy as a mother and wife. The time I carve out for myself I spend doing yoga, watching movies, reading, visiting museums and art galleries and going for long walks. And being a neat freak, there is always something to do. But I still manage to read. I rather skip sleep.
Thoughts & Quotes
I am not a blogger. That's why I will share some of my quotes and thoughts here on my website. If you would like to comment on anything feel free to contact me.
Happy Reading!
"Is egoism pushing the boundaries of basic morality? How far could and should free expression go without jeopardizing the good impression, which is part of a civilized society? Free expression can be exercised while observing Right & Wrong. How? Simply through Respect for others. "
"Too many options can be more limiting than having only one option which needs to be exercised at the best of our abilities."
"It is always the Artist who is admired in time and NOT the rich man who commissioned the work."
"As small as our worldly share may be in pecuniary matters I wish it will always be large in health."
"No matter how much we wish or pray or long for something, there are moments when we just have to sit still and wait... for God or the universe or fate -however you want to label it. In my life those moments of standstill have been the ones with most impact!"
"The cruelest battleground is where a man is fighting himself. Fighting his pride. Fighting his conscience."
"I need the river of my fate to meander softly. I am through with turbulency!"
"At times it seems a Herculean Task to accomplish some goals without the loss of our personal integrity. The eternal ethical question remains: Isn't the man lucky who doesn't have the luxury of personal moral standards? Who is only occupied with practical matters rather than the philosophy of Right and Wrong. And in a mishap isn't it the money of the practical man that bails out the noble/honorable man?"
How to Receive through Giving
During my years at Elementary School both my parents were working full time. Lucky for me I belonged to the era when children could walk to and from school without ending up in some pervert's trunk or basement. I would walk the distance to and from school alone, arrive at home after school, eat my lunch alone, do my homework alone, and play alone until slowly the rest of the family started to arrive. By the time the family was sitting around the dining table for dinner there wasn't much time and energy left for me. That's why I cherish the moments with my son immensely. I am there during each of his activities or classes. I see him play, we eat every meal together and we read together. While giving my son the time and experience I never had, I also give the little girl -myself- the opportunity to Receive more than 30 years later the missed affection and time, through Giving. Finally the little girl inside gets to have cherished childhood memories. I am eternally grateful for this second chance.
Should we Dare to be our own Critics?
I never read a book or watched a movie because of the reviews alone. I always preferred to make up my own mind. Be my own judge or critic. There comes a calm satisfaction with the knowledge of being able to form your own opinions. Lately I have seen more offers of boxed sets of books. Some are chosen by renowned authors. Nowadays almost everything we buy is pre packaged. The only time we really browse is when we shop for clothes. Unless we buy those such as socks, in a pack as well. Isn't it sad that by buying books as part of a set we close our mind and imagination to the possibility of surprise? We might discover an author and enjoy their writing. If there is no time to browse for books, be it online or in an actual book store or even in the library, then we most likely do not have the time to read those books chosen for the boxed set, either. Be prepared to go browsing and to be surprised. And more importantly follow your own likings. Do not wait for a so called critic to make up your mind. Be your own critic!
How to beat the 40's Blues
Well it would help to jump a whole decade ahead. I believe turning 50 must be definitely harder than turning 40. But what shall we mortals without a time machine do? First we wallow in our misery. But at some point we need to get out of it if we don't want to drown in our own snot and tears. Believe me I sniffed the former and shed the latter. It's not that I haven't achieved much. I have filled in these 40 years more than my parents in their 70's. But I guess we all have our own journeys to complete and not to compete with the other's. I still weigh as much as in my 30's plus 5 pounds after the baby. And I am still below average. I know a lot of women are now thinking 'What the hell is she complaining about?!?' I still love my husband and like him mostly. After 15 years of faithful marriage and less and less sex it takes a lot to LIKE your husband. Believe me when I say that it requires much more intense meditation and will power to LIKE your spouse along with all his ticks and habits and not talking of snoring and the more and more loud bowel movements. Love is a given at this time. At least in my case.
How is it that the more we do as women, wives, mothers, lovers and taxi drivers to our children, the less we receive? But GOD Almighty we are expected to cook a Thanks Giving Turkey for our Better Half when the empty milk jug is actually put into the recycling bin and not left in the fridge or in the less likely case put into the trash can! The red carpet awards ceremony is EXPECTED from us!!!
To the Sisterhood of the Better Halfs: I am not an expert but felt the urge to open up more and share with whomever pleases and enjoys, my little piece of philosophy about life, love and hopefully some more sex.

Let me know your thoughts and feedback.
